Technical Study 4: Groundwater Modeling Analysis in the Nile Delta

 

The Enhanced Water Resources Management Project (EWRMP) funded by GEF under World Bank guidelines under component number 2 which comprises six research studies tackling varies aspects of water resources. Component two is implemented by the different institutes of NWRC. This concerned research study number four was mainly responsible of groundwater modelling analysis in the Nile Delta.

 

Objective

 

The main objective of the study is to use groundwater modelling to assess the impacts of climate change (sea level rise) on groundwater potential in the Nile Delta region.

 

To study the process of salinization and to obtain a tool for analysis of future groundwater conditions a density dependent groundwater model is set-up for the entire Nile Delta. The model is able to carry out long term scenario calculations providing a tool for groundwater management activities

 

 Output

 

The results of the density dependent groundwater model of the Nile Delta indicate that the main danger to the salinization of the Delta aquifer comes from the saline water trapped in the deeper part of the aquifer and less from the intrusion of sea water. The rise in sea water level due to climate change has an effect only in a very small zone near the coast.

 

 

Digitizing and updating the hydrogeological maps of some selected development areas in Egypt

 

Hydrogeological maps is considered as basic tools for the development and management of groundwater resources in the desert areas of Egypt. The hydrogeological maps proposed for the present project will be helpful to cover all the needs of specialists who are working in the field of groundwater management and planning, especially the planners and the decisions makers

 

Objective

The goal of the present proposal comprises the preparation of 12 of digital and updated hydrogeological map sheets on scale of 1:500000 and 1:100000 selected from some developed areas of the Western Desert of Egypt (Beni Suef, Farafra "Ain Dala – Abu monkar" , Bahariya, Dakhla, Maghara, Oweinat, South East Qattara, West Kom Ombo). The methodology will follow the UNESCO & ACSAD legend (1989)

National groundwater Quality Monitoring Network

• Objectives:

Detecting the change in ground water level and quality all over Egypt
• Protecting groundwater aquifer from deterioration.

• Outputs:

• Annual report for the change in groundwater quality all over Egypt.
• Preparing -database for groundwater quality to be considered in development plans.

 

 

Geophysical studies in Farfra Area in the National project of 1.5 Million feddans

• Objectives:

Determining the reason of formation of saline poles in both the 10000 and 21000 feddans areas.
• Detecting if there are any groundwater impacts in the area (Geotechnical).

• Outputs:

• Discovering a "Salt" layer under the soil.
• Formation of Caves and Sink holes in the limestone bedrock layer.
• Detecting of the thickness changes of the soil layer in the two areas.
• Technical report for these explorations and how to avoid these hazards.

 

Geophysical studies in South East Qattara depression Area in the National project of 1.5 Million feddans

• Objectives:

Detecting the groundwater aquifers that exist in the non-discovered area.
• Detecting groundwater relative quality.
• Determining the drilling locations for the exploratory wells.

• Outputs:

• Discovering new properties for Nubian aquifer in this area.
• Detecting the basement depth and structure in this area.
• Technical report for these explorations and the drilling locations.
• Drilling of five exploratory wells producing natural flowing water.

 

Geophysical studies in Halayeb & Shalateen Area

• Objectives:

Exploring the groundwater aquifer in the area.
• Detecting groundwater relative quality.
Determining the suitability of groundwater in which development activities.
• Determining the drilling locations for the exploratory wells.

• Outputs:

• Discovering the aquifer geometries in the area and its presence as water pockets.
• The groundwater salinity degree is high.
• Groundwater quantity is not suitable in industrial and agricultural field.
• Sea water desalination is the best way for water issues in the area.

• Technical report for these explorations and the drilling locations

 Supervising on the drilling of 144 deep wells in the national project of constructing 13 development society in Sinai Area under the authority of the Armed Forces

• Objectives:

Constructing of 144 deep water wells in Sinai.
• Supervision of the drilling steps, well designing and pumping tests.
